The English Editor of ,,The Circle" to his friends in the USA

Dear friends.

Looking back on my five weeks' trip through the United States now from the di tance of my as usual over-loaded, desk makes ine realize that this trip has been one of the happiest of my life With a single exception, harely worth mentioning, i. e being air-sick between Washington and Fort Worth, these 38 days I was able to spend with you have been perfect. I knew in advance that I was in for an exceptionally interesting time but what actually happened surpassed expectations. I do wish there was in English a compound noun like the German «Gastfreundschaft as this Ger. man word expresses exactly what I feel when looking back now. «Gastfreundschaft contains two different meanings hospitality and friendship. And hospitality and friedship were just the two things I was shown so richly wherever I went. My gratitude for the splendid welcome you have all given me is very great indeed.

In recalling the names of New York, Brooklyn, Princeton Baltimore, Los Angeles San Francisco, Chigazo and Miami my friends will know how wonderful it has been for me meeting you all. I should like to add to these names of the cities I visited a long distance call 1 was able to make to Georgia and, last but not least, the memory of a small cottage on Long Island, now very dear to me.

This trip of mine has been in one way unique. With one single exception I have met, talked to, and made friends with only people of my own feather It is very Comforting indeed to have been able to realize that it is only the Atlantic Ocean which divides me from people who are fundamentally the same as I am. For the rest your problems are mine, as your joys are mine. For you all as for all of us over here life holds the same delights and the same burdens as for everybody else. But in all deference to science I personally think the enjoyment of delights as well as the unravelling of the burdens is best done by ourselves and not by the aid of the famous couch». The mere fact of having met a few men on my trip from whom I have gained Considerably as an individual has proved to me how vital it is to go out into the world, leave the Ivory Towers, he open to all onslaughts of the world, meet people learn from them and return home immensely richer.

Unfortunately I have no space to mention all my friends singly. I rest assured however, in the knowledge that they all will know how greatly I have enjoyed meeting them, seeing their different homes, their various ways of living, their manifold attitudes to life generally and to our own life as well.

To be able to meet the staff of ONE and of THE MATTACHINE REVIEW was naturally a great event It has made me especially happy to meet my colleagues personally and compare a good many notes with them. It will make future collaborat ion so much easier

May 1 conclude this letter by the repeated expression of my personal gratitude to all of you I have met Rolf joins me in this and has asked me to convey his very best greetings to you: all.

INFORMATION FOLDERS

Two folders, designed to be used as companion mailing pieces, are available from national headquarters of the Mattachine Society and its branch offices. They are "In Case You Didn't Know" and "What Has Mattachine Done?"
